CROCKETT, CA – A tragic incident over the weekend has left the Crockett community reeling after a 16-year-old boy from Southern California died during an illegal sideshow event. The boy, identified as Jose Cuevas, fell to his death from an overpass near Interstate 80.
Drone footage captured the scene where approximately 100 spectators gathered to watch vehicles perform dangerous maneuvers. The event significantly disrupted traffic, extending nearly onto the Carquinez Bridge. Authorities report that Cuevas attempted to cross between the on-ramp and off-ramp by climbing over a concrete barrier, but tragically fell 75 feet.
Local residents are expressing their grief and calling for action to prevent such events. “It’s a senseless loss,” said a community member. “We need to find ways to stop these dangerous gatherings.”
Michael Pennisi, a local volunteer, has been actively fundraising for the installation of license plate readers at Crockett’s entry and exit points. “Our goal is to deter these activities and prevent any further tragedies,” Pennisi explained. Three surveillance cameras are set to be installed soon.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is working diligently to address the rising number of sideshows in the Bay Area. Although they have managed to stop many planned events, responding once they begin remains a challenge. “We often face large crowds with limited resources,” a CHP spokesperson noted.
Residents of Crockett are urging those involved in sideshows to consider the potential consequences. “This has to stop before more lives are lost,” said a local resident, emphasizing the urgent need for effective measures.
