16-year-old girl killed in deliberate hit-and-run

JACKSON HEIGHTS, NY – Hours after a tragic hit-and-run, a gray Chevy Suburban remains at the scene, drawing attention to the fatal event that claimed the life of 16-year-old Joy Gomez Alvarez and left a 32-year-old woman hospitalized.

Police report that the incident stemmed from a dispute involving the 38-year-old driver and the victims. Surveillance footage captures a group altercation outside a restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue and 91st Street, moments before the driver allegedly struck the victims with his vehicle. Witnesses noted the Suburban was double-parked outside the establishment before the tragedy unfolded.

Angel, a local resident, witnessed the chaos. He recounted seeing the vehicle mount the sidewalk and hit the young women. The driver then reversed, driving erratically and colliding with a parked car. Investigators say the driver continued along Roosevelt Avenue, crashing into another parked vehicle before being stopped.

The aftermath of the crash left the front of the Chevy severely damaged, and a nearby white car bore significant impact marks. The scene remained active for hours as authorities continued their investigation.

Locals expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, particularly due to the young age of the deceased. “It’s heartbreaking,” one resident remarked. “To lose someone so young with a future ahead is devastating.”

The driver was apprehended at the scene, while the injured woman is reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital. Despite the gravity of the incident, some residents were unsurprised, citing it as a reflection of the current state of the city.

As the investigation proceeds, the community grapples with the violence that seems all too common in their neighborhood.
