Mail-in Voting Starts in North Carolina

Mail-in Voting Starts in North Carolina

(ConservativeStar.com) – It’s not even Labor Day, and one state is already sending out mail-in ballots to voters. In 2016, approximately 25% of voters cast a ballot by mail. This year, it could be significantly higher due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, September 4, North Carolina became the first state to mail out ballots in the 2020 election. They’re expected to mail 600,000 to voters over the next few weeks. In the first wave sent, the majority were to Democratic and Independent voters.

Historically, Republicans have been the majority of the mail-in voters in the southern battleground state. However, this year 326,000 ballots were requested by Democrats, 192,000 from Independents, and only 92,000 were by Republicans. The shift could be due to President Trump’s warning about mail-in voter fraud.

North Carolina voters have until October 27 to request a ballot by mail. However, if they wait that long, the postal service may not be able to ensure ballots are received in time to be counted.

North Carolina is once again a battleground state. According to the RealClearPolitics average, Biden is ahead of Trump by less than one point.
