WALDORF, MD – A disturbing incident unfolded in a Maryland baseball stadium on Friday night when a bounce house, blown away by a wind gust, led to the death of a 5-year-old boy and inflicted injuries on another child. The tragic event took place during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and York Revolution game at the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
At approximately 9:21 p.m., the wind gust unexpectedly lifted the bounce house, located in the right field stands of the stadium, approximately 15 to 20 feet into the air. The two children inside fell from the inflated structure before it landed back on the field, according to Charles County officials.
Nearby emergency medical service teams, which were already present at the stadium, quickly rushed to provide aid, along with the baseball team’s trainers and several volunteer first responders who were attending the game. However, despite immediate medical attention, the 5-year-old boy from La Plata, Maryland, later died in Children’s Hospital. His identity has not been publicly released.
The second child encountered non-life-threatening injuries from the unfortunate incident and was promptly airlifted to a hospital for further treatment.
In a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences, Charles County Government Commissioner President Reuben B. Collins, commended the immediate response of the EMS team and the Maryland State Police, stating, “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time.”
Following the incident, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs abandoned the game scheduled for Saturday. They have also offered counseling and supportive resources to those affected, including families, players, and spectators present during the incident.
