A 23-year-old man from Lowell has been taken into custody following a deadly assault on his mother early Monday morning. Michael Belous was arrested and given several charges of assault and battery. The Middlesex District Attorney, Marian Ryan, and Lowell Police Superintendent, Greg Hudon, confirmed the arrest in a joint statement.
On Monday morning, Lowell Police officers responded to a residence on Middlesex Street. They arrived at the home after receiving a distressing 911 call reporting a woman who had been severely beaten. The victim, identified as Elena Vainer, 51, from Reading, was found dead inside the home. She displayed visible bruising on her face and other signs of trauma. Preliminary investigations revealed that Vainer had been visiting her son at his condominium on Middlesex Street over the weekend. At some point during the visit, a physical altercation occurred, resulting in Vainer sustaining severe injuries to her head and neck. Neighbors expressed shock and horror at the incident, with one claiming that he seemed to be “out of his mind.”
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause and manner of Vainer’s death. Michael Belous is currently being held on bail until his next court appearance. An investigation is currently taking place to determine more details about the incident.
This arrest follows another deadly assault that occurred over the weekend in Newton. Richard Hanson, 64, was charged with murder in the beating death of his wife, Nancy Hanson, 54, at their Newton home on Saturday. Prosecutors revealed in court that Richard Hanson allegedly used a baseball bat to fatally attack his wife, with their three children witnessing the horrifying incident.
