Employee kills three co-workers at San Antonio business

The 21-year-old suspected gunman was found with a self-inflicted wound after an hours-long search, authorities said.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A 21-year-old employee opened fire Saturday morning at a landscape supply business on the city’s Northeast Side, killing three co-workers before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound nearby, police said.

Authorities said the shooting unfolded during the start of the workday and triggered a large response across the area as officers, SWAT teams and K-9 units searched for the gunman. Police identified the suspected shooter as Jose Hernandez Galo. The victims were a 24-year-old woman and two men, ages 38 and 48, who also worked for the company. Officials said the attack did not appear random, but a motive has not been confirmed. Detectives were processing the scene and interviewing employees Saturday and Sunday as the department worked to piece together what led up to the gunfire and the suspect’s actions afterward.

Officers were called around 7:40 a.m. to the business along Stahl Road near Jung Road after reports of shots fired, according to police. Workers ran from the property and sheltered in nearby buildings as patrol units arrived. Commanders set a perimeter and asked people to avoid the area while they swept the grounds and adjacent brush. Chief William McManus said in brief remarks that the early evidence suggested a targeted attack. “This was not random,” McManus said, adding that investigators would withhold further details until next of kin notifications and evidence processing were complete. By midmorning, specialized teams moved through the site, and drones scanned the tree line north of the yard where equipment and pallets are stored.

Officials said all four people who died were employees of the landscape supply business. Police named the suspected gunman as Jose Hernandez Galo, 21, and said he was found late in the morning with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a wooded area near the worksite. The three victims — a 24-year-old woman and two men, 38 and 48 — were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were being withheld pending formal identification by the medical examiner and notification of relatives. Investigators did not immediately release how many rounds were fired or the caliber of the weapon recovered. Detectives collected security video from the yard and nearby storefronts and are reviewing radio traffic and 911 calls to set an exact timeline of the attack.

Police said the business, Mission Landscape Supply, sits in an industrial pocket off Stahl Road on the Northeast Side, a corridor where warehouses back up to residential streets. Saturday’s shooting drew uniformed officers from multiple divisions along with tactical units that fanned out to search the adjoining greenbelt. The department said early in the response that the suspected shooter might still be at large and urged drivers to steer clear of the area until the scene was secured. By about 11:40 a.m., searchers located the suspect with a gunshot wound consistent with suicide. Homicide detectives continued to take statements through the afternoon as evidence technicians mapped shell casings, photographed vehicles and collected items from the loading yard.

Records show San Antonio police have responded to calls for service in the general area in the past, but there were no immediate indicators of prior violence involving the company or the people now identified in the case. Saturday’s attack came as employees were arriving and preparing for weekend orders, according to police. Neighbors said the company is typically quiet during early hours except for truck traffic and forklifts. A store manager at a nearby strip center said staff locked the doors when sirens raced up Stahl Road and kept customers inside while officers set up a command post across the street. The police department said it would provide an evidence-based update once next-of-kin notifications and autopsy results are complete.

Police said the criminal investigation remains active. Detectives are examining workplace interactions, recent schedules and any reported conflicts to determine a motive. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies on the three victims and the suspected shooter. If additional suspects are ruled out, the case is expected to proceed as a closed homicide-suicide. The department said it would release victim names once confirmed and schedule a briefing early this week to summarize findings. No charges are pending. The business is expected to remain closed while police finish scene processing and return property to the owners.

On Sunday morning, the yard entrance remained taped off and a police cruiser idled by the gate as officers limited access. Forklifts sat quiet beside stacks of stone and soil bags while employees gathered in small groups in the parking lot. “Everyone here is devastated,” said a neighboring shop owner who declined to be identified. “We watched squad cars fly by and then saw helicopters; it was terrifying.” A worker who arrived after the shooting said he was turned away and told to await further instructions from management. “It’s a small crew. People know each other,” he said.

As of Sunday afternoon, police said the investigation was ongoing and that the next update would come after the medical examiner completes identifications. A department spokesperson said a briefing could occur as early as Monday. The scene was still secured and detectives were continuing interviews and evidence collection.
