LONGWOOD, NY – Authorities are on the lookout for a group of individuals suspected of assaulting and robbing a young man on a subway train in the Bronx. The incident occurred last Friday night, March 7, around 9:45 p.m. on a southbound 2 train at the Freeman Street subway station, according to police.
Surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows five suspects inside a subway car. The group includes two individuals partially concealing their faces, one wearing a pink hoodie, another clad in a black hoodie, and a fifth person with long, dark hair. Police are urging the public to assist in identifying these individuals.
The victim, a 23-year-old man, was approached by the group, who allegedly punched him in the back of the head before stealing his phone. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are continuing their investigation.
Despite this unsettling incident, recent statistics from the NYPD indicate a decline in transit crime in the Bronx, with a reported 28% decrease compared to the same period last year. Robbery incidents specifically have fallen by 19%, following efforts by city and state officials to enhance security on public transportation. Governor Kathy Hochul’s initiative to deploy additional police officers to patrol the subway overnight has been a part of these efforts.
However, local residents remain apprehensive. Many express a reluctance to use the subway during late hours, citing ongoing safety concerns. “It’s very scary when you don’t know what to expect,” one resident said, echoing the sentiments of many who choose alternative transportation after dark.
The victim of the attack is expected to recover, but the incident has reignited discussions about safety on public transit. Police continue to seek information from the public to help identify and apprehend the suspects.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the NYPD as the investigation continues.
