UNION CITY, CA – An eight-year-old girl’s quick thinking may have thwarted a potential kidnapping attempt, her parents believe, although police are not convinced the child was targeted. The incident, which unfolded Friday morning on Tidewater Drive, has left the community on edge.
The girl was preparing for school when she noticed four young men exit a car across the street. Acting swiftly, she ran back to her house as the men gave chase. Her mother managed to shut the door just in time, preventing them from entering.
The parents, who wish to remain anonymous, expressed their gratitude for their daughter’s vigilance. “We’re very proud of her for being so alert,” they said, emphasizing that her quick reaction could have prevented a kidnapping.
Union City Police Sergeant Brandon Hayward acknowledged the bravery of both the girl and her mother. However, he suggested the incident was likely a crime of opportunity rather than a targeted kidnapping attempt. “They were probably waiting for someone to come out or walk by,” he explained.
The event serves as a stark reminder for the community about the importance of teaching children to stay aware of their surroundings. “It’s a learning lesson for us all,” one resident commented, stressing the need for vigilance over distractions like mobile phones.
A neighbor, however, remains convinced that the group had ill intentions toward the girl. “It was clear they were after her,” the neighbor insisted, noting the group’s aggressive pursuit.
