Husband calls 911 after stabbing his wife to death

Shiva Gummi, 33, called 911 to report that he had repeatedly stabbed himself in a failed suicide attempt. His wife, whom he had fatally stabbed, was laying beside him. The incident took place on Saturday morning, as revealed in an arrest report released by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Gummi’s wife, Gwendoline Amsrala, 28, was found next to him with multiple stab wounds to her arms, abdomen, and throat. When first responders arrived, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shiva Gummi was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, where he underwent surgery. He was arrested and booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center, facing a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon.

The arrest report revealed that Gummi called 911 and informed the operator that he had been at home with his wife and mother-in-law when he stabbed himself all over his body five hours prior. When asked about his wife’s whereabouts, Gummi stated that she was next to him and dead.

Upon arrival, police found the couple on top of a mattress on the floor. The pair was covered in blankets, and a large, bloody kitchen knife was found nearby. Gummi had sustained multiple self-inflicted stab wounds.

Homicide detectives spoke with another individual at the home who was unaware of any prior domestic abuse between the couple. However, they mentioned that Gummi had been upset with Amsrala after she had spent the night at a friend’s house following a night of drinking.

Amsrala was a recent graduate from UNLV’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine. UNLV Internal Medicine made an Instagram post that highlighted the loss of an exceptional physician and praised Amsrala’s positive energy and passion for her work.

A UNLV spokesperson confirmed Amsrala’s graduation from the School of Medicine in 2022. A 2018 photo shows her receiving her white coat in a ceremony for incoming medical students at UNLV.
