Man accused of killing his sister

LYNN, MA – A chilling case unfolded in Lynn as a 31-year-old man faced charges in the death of his half-sister. Joshua Smith, already on probation for a previous offense, stood before the court on accusations of kidnapping and murder.

Smith’s arraignment took place at Lynn District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the death of Michelle Knox, his half-sister. The incident occurred early Sunday morning when Knox’s body was discovered in the New Hall Street apartment shared by Smith and his father.

The courtroom was filled with family members, their presence underscoring the gravity of the situation. The prosecution presented statements made by Smith at the scene, which allegedly implicated him in Knox’s death. Upon police arrival, Smith reportedly made several incriminating remarks regarding his sister’s murder.

While the prosecutor did not disclose the manner of Knox’s death, neighbors recounted hearing unsettling screams that suggested a violent altercation. “It was like a horrific scream, like somebody got stabbed or something,” a neighbor described, highlighting the chaos of the scene.

At the time of his arrest, Smith was on probation following a July conviction for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. This history adds a grim layer to the current charges he faces.

Family members of both Smith and Knox were visibly distraught and declined to comment publicly, requesting privacy during their time of grief. “Just let our family grieve, please,” one family member implored.

Smith’s attorney acknowledged the emotional strain on all involved, regardless of the case’s outcome. “Whether someone’s guilty or not guilty, it’s still a tragedy when an individual passes away,” the lawyer remarked.

The court ordered Smith to be held without bail, with a probable cause hearing scheduled for next month. This ongoing case continues to cast a shadow over the Lynn community.
