Man arrested after assaulting mother and throwing Molotov cocktail at officers

AUSTIN, TX – A man has been arrested following a violent incident involving his elderly mother and law enforcement officers. James Andrew Werner, 38, is in custody, facing several felony charges, including assault on an elderly person.

Authorities report that on Friday, Werner broke into his 73-year-old mother’s home, demanding she withdraw money from an ATM. When she refused, he allegedly threatened to burn her alive. Werner then forced her into a car, repeatedly striking her and threatening to crash the vehicle to kill them both. Fortunately, she managed to escape by jumping from the moving car.

The next day, police tracked Werner to an apartment complex on Santera Boulevard. As officers attempted to arrest him, Werner reportedly retaliated by throwing acid at them and barricading himself inside an apartment. He further escalated the situation by hurling a Molotov cocktail at the officers.

Three officers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation but are expected to recover fully. Werner was eventually taken into custody without further incident.

The charges against Werner are severe, reflecting the gravity of his actions. The community is left reeling from the ordeal, questioning how such violence could erupt within a family and spill over to threaten public safety.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, aiming to piece together the full sequence of events leading to the arrest. Meanwhile, Werner remains in jail, awaiting his court appearance.

This incident has sparked discussions about mental health resources and family support systems, highlighting the need for preventative measures in such volatile situations.
