Man arrested for stalking WNBA player

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A Texas man is facing serious charges after being arrested in Indianapolis for allegedly stalking Caitlin Clark, a prominent figure in the basketball community. Michael Lewis, 55, was taken into custody at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis following a series of alarming social media posts that targeted Clark.

Court documents reveal that Lewis had been obsessively tagging Clark in hundreds of posts on X, a social media platform, over the past month. The frequency and intensity of these posts had escalated recently, with some containing language deemed too violent and aggressive to be broadcast.

Authorities were alerted to Lewis’s behavior by Pacers Sports and Entertainment after he traveled from Texas to Indianapolis, reportedly posting about his arrival in the city. Investigators used the IP address from his posts to confirm his presence at a Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Indianapolis.

Lewis’s actions raised several red flags, particularly when he purchased tickets to a Butler basketball game. Clark, known to attend such events, was believed to be a potential target. The situation prompted law enforcement to question Lewis at his hotel room on January 8. During the interview, Lewis claimed his posts were part of an imaginary relationship and intended as a joke.

Despite the warning from officers, Lewis continued to post about Clark, even referencing a visit from the FBI. His behavior did not change, leading authorities to file charges against him. He was subsequently arrested at a Sheraton Hotel near Monument Circle.

Caitlin Clark, concerned for her safety, spoke with investigators, expressing fear and noting that she had altered her routines to ensure her protection. The court documents indicate that the ordeal had a significant impact on her life.

Lewis is currently held on a $50,000 surety bond and has been issued a no-contact order regarding Clark. He is also prohibited from visiting Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Hinkle Fieldhouse. Any further online activity targeting Clark could result in additional charges.

Lewis is scheduled for an initial court hearing tomorrow, where more details about the case may emerge.
