Man charged in two violent sexual assaults days apart

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A man is in custody following the alleged sexual assaults of two women along the Monon Trail earlier this month. Authorities credit DNA evidence for leading to the arrest.

The first incident occurred three weeks ago during an early morning run near Fall Creek. A woman jogging was suddenly ambushed by a man who placed her in a headlock and dragged her into nearby woods. Court documents reveal the attacker repeatedly threatened to kill her. Despite sustaining multiple injuries, the victim managed to escape and alert a passerby, who aided in scaring off the assailant.

Less than a week later, a second woman reported a similar assault. She was grabbed from behind, knocked to the ground, and strangled before being sexually assaulted by the same suspect, according to police reports.

Crucial DNA evidence was found under the fingernail of one victim. The Marion County Crime Lab swiftly processed this evidence, linking it to 27-year-old Larry Duerson. Authorities expressed relief at the arrest, emphasizing the senselessness of the attacks.

Duerson, who reportedly suffers from schizophrenia, confessed to the assaults but denied certain details. He is currently held without bond as prosecutors prepare formal charges.

The community has voiced gratitude for the quick resolution, highlighting the importance of DNA technology in solving such crimes. The Monon Trail, a popular spot for locals, remains under increased police surveillance to ensure safety.

These incidents have sparked discussions about mental health and crime, as well as the need for community vigilance and support for victims.
