Man who broke into mansion dies in shooting with police

POMPO BEACH, FL – A tense standoff between a SWAT team and an armed suspect ended in tragedy Monday, as authorities responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a high-end mansion. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Estrelin Appalone, barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a prolonged confrontation.

The incident unfolded when a property caretaker noticed Appalone’s vehicle parked at the mansion on Bay Drive. Concerned, they contacted the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, deputies attempted to engage with Appalone, who fled into the house, locking himself in a third-floor bedroom.

Negotiators worked for hours to defuse the situation, but Appalone reportedly threatened to provoke a violent response from law enforcement. As tensions escalated, a sheriff’s drone was deployed inside the home to assess the situation. The drone’s presence was met with gunfire, believed to be directed at the device.

Sheriff Gregory Tony stated that a second drone was sent in and indicated that Appalone might have harmed himself. Subsequently, a K-9 unit was deployed, but the situation deteriorated further when Appalone began attacking the dog with a drone.

The SWAT team was forced to enter the room, resulting in gunfire. Sheriff Tony described the tragic outcome as a “suicide by cop” scenario, noting the suspect’s apparent intention to provoke a deadly confrontation.

Authorities later revealed Appalone’s criminal history, which includes time served in Florida corrections for charges such as counterfeiting and grand theft. The community remains shaken by the events, with many residents expressing disbelief that such violence could occur in their neighborhood.

The investigation remains active, as officials continue to piece together the details of the standoff. Meanwhile, the mansion stands as a somber reminder of the day’s events.
