RONDA, NC – A heartbreaking development took place in Ronda, North Carolina when an 8-year-old boy who was reported missing was found dead in a nearby pond. Wilkes County Emergency Management confirmed the tragic discovery on Tuesday shortly after noon.
The search for Zachariah “Zach” Walker was carried out by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, Ronda Fire Department, and Wilkes Rescue Squad. Residents from the local neighborhood also assisted in the massive search operation, ensuring that the area remained clear of unnecessary foot traffic.
Described as severely autistic and non-verbal by his grandmother, Zach was last seen at his home on Tuesday. The young boy was fondly remembered as a “happy child” who ran fast and did not respond well to shouting.
In a gesture of solidarity, the Jonesville Police Department conducted a prayer at the town hall’s flag pole when the news broke at noon. The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office also provided support in the search by deploying three K-9 units.
As officials grapple with the question of how Zach was able to leave his home, the sheriff’s office continues to collaborate with his family to uncover the circumstances that led to the original disappearance. So far, emergency services have ruled out foul play.
Jason Reavis, the Director and Coordinator of Wilkes County Emergency Services revealed that almost 30 agencies from Wilkes County and neighboring counties, including state agencies, joined forces in the search operation.
Despite the tragic outcome, Reavis stressed the intention to bring closure to Zach’s family and assured them of unwavering support. He labeled Zach’s demise as an “unfortunate accident,” adding that an autopsy would be conducted due to the nature of the death and Zach’s young age.
