Off-duty deputy shoots man attempting to enter vehicle with child in it

ATASCOCITA, TX – A man was fatally shot by an off-duty Harris County sheriff’s deputy Thursday evening in the Atascocita area. The deputy, who was unharmed, was involved in the incident on Treewood Drive near West Lake Houston Parkway.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was in his vehicle with his infant child secured in a car seat when a man attempted to enter the car from the passenger side. The deputy, seated in the driver’s seat, immediately contacted 911 to report the situation, stating that he had drawn his weapon and had the man at gunpoint.

Authorities report that the deputy issued multiple warnings to the individual, instructing him not to enter the vehicle. Despite these commands, the man allegedly opened the door and attempted to get inside.

Fearing for his child’s safety, the deputy discharged his firearm several times, striking the suspect. Responding officers found the man on the lawn of a nearby home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies provided medical assistance before the man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators have confirmed that the deputy did not know the deceased man, whose identity has not yet been released. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
