SOUTHGATE, MI – The intense manhunt for a suspect accused of shooting two Southgate police officers came to a swift conclusion Thursday evening. The officers, who were treated and released from the hospital, are now recovering at home. Both have notable careers with the department, having transitioned from the Detroit Police Department.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Jeremiah Kemp, was apprehended without incident after a 4.5-hour search. Known to local law enforcement, Kemp allegedly ambushed the officers at the Reserve Apartment Complex, firing at them as they responded to a call about a man with a gun.
Following the shooting, Kemp reportedly fled by jumping from a second-floor window and disappearing on foot. The Southgate Director of Public Safety, Joe Marsh, confirmed the officers were nearing the end of their shift when the incident occurred and expressed their understandable frustration.
Authorities launched an extensive search operation involving local and federal officers, canines, and air support. Residents in the vicinity of Northline and the I-75 overpass were advised to shelter in place during the search.
The search ended where it began, at the apartment complex, where Kemp was found. It’s unclear if he was aided by acquaintances or strangers, but the arrest was made without further violence.
Investigators are still processing the scene and searching for the weapon used in the shooting. Residents are urged to contact Southgate Police if they discover any suspicious items.
The coordinated effort of multiple law enforcement agencies was crucial in resolving the situation quickly and safely. The swift response has been praised as an exemplary display of police work.
