WASHINGTON, D.C. – After more than two decades, a breakthrough has finally been made in the cold case of a young woman murdered in her Capitol Hill apartment. Police have charged George Mudd, 70, with first-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Susan Swengros, whose brutal killing remained a mystery for 26 years.
Authorities announced that advancements in DNA technology led them to Mudd, a former neighbor of Swengros. Prosecutors revealed that Swengros had previously met Mudd through mutual acquaintances. The precise motive behind her murder remains unclear, but her former employer expressed relief that an arrest has been made, noting it brings closure to a long-standing mystery.
Court documents paint a grim picture of the crime. Swengros was found with her throat cut, and evidence suggested she was alive when attacked. Additionally, there are indications she may have been sexually assaulted postmortem. DNA from the crime scene matched Mudd’s, linking him to the murder as early as 2012.
At that time, Mudd was serving a 10-year sentence in federal prison for a separate assault on another neighbor. In that incident, he attempted to sexually assault a woman after stabbing her in the neck. Despite the DNA match, Mudd denied any involvement in Swengros’s murder, claiming he used drugs and paid for sex but never harmed her.
The case’s delay puzzled many, as the DNA connection was known for over a decade. Investigators explained that the FBI had misplaced the crucial DNA data file, stalling progress until it was recovered last year. This discovery allowed the case to move forward, culminating in Mudd’s recent arrest.
In court, prosecutors disclosed Mudd’s criminal history, including a guilty plea in 2000 for a robbery involving a box cutter. His defense sought bail, citing health issues such as diabetes and an upcoming knee surgery.
