ST. LOUIS, MO – A routine traffic stop escalated into a dramatic high-speed chase and gunfire exchange on October 30, leaving a young man hospitalized and his family demanding answers. The incident, captured on police body and dash cameras, unfolded in the heart of St. Louis, drawing intense scrutiny from the community and law enforcement officials.
The chain of events began when police pulled over 23-year-old Roland Henderson for a vehicle violation, citing the car’s dark tinted windows. The interaction quickly intensified as officers detected the smell of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. Henderson, who was on a call with his mother at the time, refused to undergo a sobriety test, leading to heightened tensions at the scene.
As officers attempted to manage the situation, Henderson sought to provide proof of insurance, a task interrupted by his ongoing phone conversation. The call turned out to be with his mother, who later expressed her distress over the incident and questioned the police’s handling of her son, who she claims has known mental health issues.
The confrontation escalated when officers noticed a firearm inside Henderson’s car. In a bid to prevent any potential escape, officers placed a tire spike near the vehicle. However, Henderson managed to speed away, initiating a pursuit that spanned several miles through city streets.
The chase reached a critical point as Henderson’s vehicle veered off an interstate on-ramp, crashing into a ditch. Officers exited their vehicles, and what followed was a chaotic exchange of gunfire. Police reported that Henderson fired first, prompting them to return fire. Despite the barrage of bullets, no officers were injured, and Henderson was eventually subdued and taken to a local hospital.
Henderson’s mother, who remained on the call throughout the ordeal, was left in shock, claiming that one of the officers involved was familiar with her son’s mental health struggles. She criticized the police response, asserting that the situation could have been handled with more understanding and care.
In the aftermath, law enforcement officials disclosed that they recovered an AR-15 style weapon and shell casings from Henderson’s vehicle. The three officers involved, representing two different local police departments, reportedly discharged 87 rounds in total during the incident.
As the investigation continues, the community awaits further clarification from the police department. The case has sparked a dialogue on the protocols used in handling individuals with mental health issues and the measures necessary to prevent such violent escalations in the future.
