Investigators say the man first tried to force a woman into a car, then accelerated at officers before being hit by gunfire and fleeing.
HENDERSON, NV — Henderson police shot and wounded a 26-year-old man on Sunday morning after he allegedly tried to kidnap a woman and then drove his car toward officers near the 1000 block of Center Street. The man fled after the shots but was later found and arrested, police said.
Police say the shooting unfolded shortly before 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, after a 911 caller reported a man attempting to force a woman into a vehicle near Center Street and East Lake Mead Parkway. The case is now in the early stages of review by Henderson detectives. Officials identified the suspect as Avyonte Webb, who was taken to University Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds and was listed as critical but stable. No officers were hurt. The incident marked Henderson’s third officer-involved shooting of 2025 and drew additional scrutiny because it began as a domestic-related call and quickly shifted into a vehicle confrontation.
Responding officers arrived around 9:43–9:45 a.m. at an apartment complex area that neighbors described as usually quiet on Sunday mornings. Police said the man matched a caller’s description from the scene. When officers ordered him to stop and approach their patrol car, he instead got into a gray Chevrolet Malibu, started the engine and drove toward one officer positioned nearby, according to police accounts. Two officers then fired. “The suspect was struck, and he then fled the scene,” Capt. Haven Tillman said at a briefing. The woman involved broke free during the struggle and was not reported injured. Witnesses described hearing several shots and the screech of tires before the Malibu clipped parked vehicles and sped north.
An arrest report filed later Sunday names the officers who fired only by last name and initial. Police say Webb was struck five times — in a finger, forearm, bicep and torso — as he accelerated. Investigators documented two parked cars hit during his escape and a subsequent crash minutes later near West Lake Mead Parkway and South Water Street. Officers relayed that the Malibu was later seen heading north at high speed on U.S. 95. With the suspect crossing into Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department jurisdiction, Henderson officers alerted Metro units. A separate 911 call from a Las Vegas residence led officers to Webb at another apartment complex, where he was taken into custody and transported to the hospital. Detectives noted he was intubated and diagnosed with a hemothorax near the left lung. Police did not report any injuries to bystanders.
Records and interviews included in the arrest report state the woman, identified to detectives as Alexis Smith, is the mother of Webb’s child. She told investigators the dispute began inside the apartment on Sunday morning, stemming from missing blunt wrappers. In her account, she said Webb pulled her from the driver’s seat of his car during the argument and that he has physically abused her in the past. In an interview summarized by detectives, Smith described Webb as someone who avoids police contact and “will risk his life to get away.” Officers at the scene were identified as R. Gee and E. Trejo in the report. Police said the initial 911 call came from a woman named “Denise,” who reported a man in a gray sweater trying to drag a woman into a car and tearing her shirt during the struggle. Investigators said no weapon was recovered from the woman and that the allegation of attempted kidnapping remains part of the case file.
Henderson police emphasized that Sunday’s shooting was the city’s third officer-involved shooting this year, a benchmark officials track publicly. The location — near the Hampton Court Apartments by Center Street and Warm Springs Road — sits a short drive from East Lake Mead Parkway, an area with a mix of residential buildings and small businesses. While police did not release dashcam or body-camera footage on Sunday, they said the department’s standard review will include interviews, video, and a forensic examination of the scene and vehicles. The report also references prior criminal cases for Webb in Nevada and California, including kidnapping and robbery-related counts, which remain separate from Sunday’s charges and will be evaluated under court rules governing past conduct. Neighbors said officers canvassed doorways for privately recorded video during the afternoon.
As of Monday, Webb faced two felony counts — assault on a protected person and resisting a public officer — along with misdemeanor counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and damaging an unattended vehicle. Detectives said additional counts could be considered as they sort through witness statements and physical evidence from the crashes. A Henderson court appearance was expected Tuesday morning. Department policy triggers an internal review and a parallel criminal inquiry handled by detectives not involved in the shooting. Officials said they will release the names of the involved officers following standard timelines and will later publish a critical incident briefing that includes edited video once initial interviews are completed.
Capt. Tillman, speaking near the taped-off block on Sunday, said officers gave commands before firing and that a supervisor will coordinate the evidence review. He declined to quantify how many rounds were fired, citing the open investigation. Residents described a heavy police presence by midmorning, with cruisers blocking traffic at Center Street. A man who lives two buildings away said he heard “four or five pops, quick,” followed by the whine of a car “hitting something and taking off.” Later, drivers along U.S. 95 reported slowdowns as patrol cars searched for the Malibu. By early afternoon, technicians photographed strike marks on two damaged parked vehicles and measured skid distances in the lot. “All officers are okay and are fine,” Tillman said.
As of late Monday, police said Webb remained hospitalized in stable condition under guard. Detectives planned additional interviews and evidence collection through the week. A court calendar listed a preliminary proceeding for Tuesday, Dec. 16. Officials said they will provide an updated briefing once charging decisions are finalized and video can be released under department protocols. The department’s next milestone is the court appearance and a routine update on the officer-involved shooting count for 2025.
