Putin, Modi Sign Arms Agreement

(ConservativeStar.com) – Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to New Delhi to meet with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The world leaders discussed and finalized 28 agreements between the two nations on issues ranging from natural resources to military equipment. Moscow’s delegation included its foreign minister, defense minister, and the CEO of Rosneft, the state-owned oil company.

One point of interest to international observers was the reaction of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Because, while they have a friendly relationship with the Russians, they’re engaged in armed conflict with India in the border region between the two countries. China’s quasi-government-backed news site, Global Times, said the agreement to provide the Russian S-400 air defense system to India would not give Indians an advantage in their dispute, contrary to reports.

When Turkey purchased the same defense systems from Russia during the Trump administration, the United States imposed sanctions and removed Turkey from a joint F-35 Stealth fighter program. President Joe Biden has committed to maintaining those sanctions or possibly adding more.

In October, Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote a letter to President Biden asking him to grant a waiver for India to protect American interests in countering China’s threat to the region. The president has not announced what course of action he will take.
