PALM HARBOR, FL – A routine search in Lake Tarpon has taken an unexpected turn as authorities and volunteers uncover a decades-old mystery. The Penllis County Sheriff’s Office, alongside a dedicated volunteer dive team, spent hours attempting to recover a 1970s Chevrolet Vega from the murky depths of the lake. The operation, complicated by the car’s fragile state, began when Sunshine State Sonar discovered the vehicle over the weekend while searching for another missing car.
The Chevy Vega, submerged for over 30 years, posed significant challenges to the recovery team. Mike Sullivan, a member of the volunteer group, explained that the vehicle’s condition made it difficult to extract intact. Visibility underwater was nonexistent, forcing divers to rely on touch to identify the car by removing parts, including a steering wheel emblem and a GM part number.
The dive team was initially searching for Brenda Star, a local woman missing since 1995. Star was last seen dropping her daughter at school amid a contentious divorce. Her disappearance remains unsolved, and her Mazda is still missing. However, the discovery of the Vega has prompted a separate investigation by the Penllis County Sheriff’s Office to determine how it ended up in the lake.
The Chevy Vega was found approximately 500 feet from Star’s last known residence, adding an intriguing layer to the ongoing search. Despite the lack of human remains in the vehicle, investigators are keen to unravel the circumstances that led to its watery grave.
Sunshine State Sonar, founded by Sullivan and his brother, consists of volunteers who dedicate their free time to searching Florida’s waters for missing persons and vehicles. This year alone, the team has recovered 70 vehicles, driven by a shared passion to provide closure for families.
While the Vega’s origins remain a mystery, the team’s efforts highlight the dedication of volunteers in solving cold cases. The Penllis County Sheriff’s Office continues to work alongside these passionate individuals, hoping to uncover the truth behind the submerged vehicle.
As the investigation progresses, the community remains hopeful for answers. The work of Sunshine State Sonar serves as a reminder of the power of volunteerism in uncovering the past and bringing peace to those left in uncertainty.
