State troopers in critical condition after shootout

CHAMBERSBURG, PA – Two Pennsylvania state troopers are in critical and serious condition after being shot during a confrontation with a suspect following a reported theft. The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. near a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Chambersburg, leading to a high-speed chase on Interstate 81.

Authorities say the pursuit began when three suspects, two women and a man, fled the scene of the reported theft. State troopers intercepted the vehicle on I-81 southbound at exit 3, deploying spike strips to halt the suspects’ car.

While the two female suspects complied and were taken into custody without incident, the male suspect opened fire on the officers. The troopers returned fire, fatally wounding the shooter.

The injured troopers were airlifted to WellSpan York Hospital. As of the latest updates, one remains in critical condition, while the other is in serious condition.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop H Major Case Team, alongside the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the incident. The crime scene extends along the Molly Pitcher Highway, close to the Maryland line.

The area remains under heavy police presence as investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Authorities have yet to release further details about the identities of the suspects or the officers involved.
