LAKE COUNTY, FL – A former educator and counselor has been arrested in a sting operation after allegedly attempting to engage in sexual activities with someone he believed to be a 15-year-old boy. The operation was conducted by Polk County deputies, who revealed that the suspect, 40-year-old Trey Taton, reached out to an undercover detective posing as the minor through social media.
Taton, who previously worked at Montverde Academy, a private school in Lake County, and for the Lake County School District, is facing multiple charges. These include traveling to meet a minor, using a computer to seduce a child, and attempted lewd and lascivious conduct.
According to the investigation, Taton described explicit acts he intended to perform in his messages. He reportedly identified himself as a psychotherapist for family life counseling. Prior to this role, he served as a swim coach and guidance counselor at Montverde Academy.
The academy confirmed that Taton was employed there in 2024 and stated that he had passed a rigorous background check before his employment. A spokesperson for the school noted that no allegations of misconduct were reported during his tenure.
Despite the charges, Taton has pleaded not guilty in court. Authorities are urging anyone who may have had suspicious interactions with him to contact them immediately.
