BROOKLYN, NY — A 12-year-old boy was stabbed in the chest at a Brownsville playground on Thursday afternoon, and two children were taken into police custody, authorities said. The stabbing occurred inside Imagination Playground at Betsy Head Park near Thomas S. Boyland St. and Dumont Ave. shortly before 3 p.m.
The incident has jolted a neighborhood ringed by schools and after-school programs and comes amid a cluster of recent stabbings involving youths across New York City this week. Investigators say the boy was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later stabilized. By Thursday night, police said one 12-year-old suspect had been arrested and charged with attempted murder after what began as a fight between children. Detectives continued to collect evidence and interview witnesses while reviewing surveillance footage from the park and surrounding blocks.
Police and park workers said the stabbing unfolded fast, drawing responding officers within minutes. Officers found the victim with a wound below the chest on a play surface cordoned by tape. Medics took the boy to Brookdale University Hospital. News crews observed a small knife, a backpack, a jacket and blood-stained clothing inside the taped area as crime scene technicians documented the site. The two children initially detained were separated for questioning at the local precinct, according to officials familiar with the response. “This was a fight between kids that turned into something far more serious,” one police supervisor at the scene said.

Betsy Head Park’s Imagination Playground sits amid apartment buildings and several schools and is a familiar after-school meeting spot. Residents said fights among teens and preteens can erupt quickly when large groups gather after dismissal. Records show city parks officers and neighborhood volunteers have worked with precinct youth officers on conflict mediation events this fall. Earlier in the week, a 16-year-old was stabbed on an MTA bus in Jamaica, Queens, underscoring wider concerns about youth fights escalating to weapons. The youth stabbings come as officials tout broader declines in certain crimes citywide while acknowledging that incidents involving young people and knives remain stubborn, particularly near transit hubs and recreation spaces.
Because the accused child is 12, the case is expected to proceed in Family Court under New York’s juvenile delinquency laws rather than through adult criminal court, unless prosecutors seek a rare exception. Police said the investigation will include interviews with children present at the park, a review of park and street cameras, and analysis of the recovered knife. Detectives planned to canvass for additional video from nearby storefronts and apartment lobbies through the weekend. Any additional findings will be forwarded to the city’s Administration for Children’s Services and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office as required in juvenile cases. Arraignment in Family Court was expected after the child’s initial processing at the precinct and juvenile intake facility, according to officials.
