Two employees killed at O’Reilly Auto Parts

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A tragic incident unfolded on the evening of September 14 at an O’Reilly Auto Parts store in the South Valley, leaving two employees dead. Richard Newman, 47, and Jesus Valdez, 18, were fatally shot in the parking lot following a dispute with a customer.

The altercation began when 27-year-old Ismile Denna entered the store to exchange an oil filter. He claimed entitlement to free motor oil, which he took without payment. When Newman and Valdez confronted him outside, the situation escalated into violence.

June Newman, Richard’s wife, was on her way to the movies when her son informed her of police activity at his father’s workplace. Panic set in as she tried to reach Richard, but her calls went unanswered. Upon arriving at the scene with her sons, she found her husband of over 30 years lying lifeless.

Richard Newman was known for his protective nature. June believes he went outside to assist Valdez, whom he considered his “work son.” She described Richard as selfless and devoted, having recently been promoted to store manager.

The family, now grappling with the loss, is seeking justice for Richard, who was the backbone of their household. He was set to lead the store in his new role, a position he was proud to have achieved.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, which has left the community in shock. The tragedy has underscored the risks faced by employees in seemingly routine situations.

As the Newman family mourns, they are determined to honor Richard’s legacy and ensure that justice is served. This senseless act of violence has left a void in their lives, with the hope that accountability will bring some measure of peace.
