PHOENIX, AZ – A daring rescue unfolded on the treacherous bends of State Route 88, where Lenny Marshall and his friends undertook a perilous mission to save two young strangers from the wreckage of a devastating crash.
Nineteen-year-old Maddie Davis and 21-year-old Andrew Nelson miraculously survived after their vehicle plunged nearly 400 feet off a cliff, leaving their families in awe and gratitude. “Life is precious,” Marshall reflected, recalling his prayers for the pair’s safety as he and his friends navigated the hazardous terrain.
The crash occurred near Tortilla Flat at a notorious curve known as Hell’s Gate. Marshall and his friends reached the scene before first responders, encountering Andrew, disoriented and bleeding, and Maddie, trapped within the crumpled car. “They’re angels. They’re heroes,” said Joyce, Maddie’s mother, expressing profound thanks for the rescuers’ bravery.
Marshall recounted the intense moments of freeing Maddie, who was ensnared by her seatbelt. “I was able to rip that center console out, untangle her,” he said, describing the teamwork that brought her to safety before airlifting.
Andrew, who received 21 staples for a head injury, was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. Maddie remains in the ICU, battling a brain bleed, a broken neck, and other serious injuries. “One day at a time, one hour at a time,” said Amber, Andrew’s mother, as the families leaned on each other for support.
