MIAMI, FL – Two tragic wrong-way crashes occurred on the same stretch of road early this morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving two others seriously injured, officials report.
The incidents took place around 4 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the turnpike near Bird Road, leading authorities to temporarily close the area. Surveillance footage captured the dramatic moments before the second collision, freezing just before impact.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) stated that the initial crash involved a blue Honda traveling in the wrong direction, which collided head-on with a silver Toyota. Both drivers were killed in this devastating accident.
Shortly thereafter, a second crash ensued. A white Toyota, also traveling against traffic, struck the wreckage of the first crash and an FHP vehicle. Thankfully, the trooper involved was unharmed.
The two occupants of the white Toyota sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for treatment. Authorities are currently working to identify those involved and continue their investigation into the causes of these tragic events.
