Two people in their 70’s drown at a Carnival Cruise Line resort

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Two American tourists in their 70s tragically drowned within hours of each other at Celebration Key, a newly opened private resort destination operated by Carnival Cruise Line on Grand Bahama Island.

Authorities in the Bahamas reported that the first incident occurred late Friday morning when a 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkeling at a beach. Despite prompt assistance and CPR by a lifeguard, the man could not be revived.

Hours later, a separate incident unfolded as a 74-year-old woman, who had arrived on a different cruise ship, became unresponsive while swimming in a resort pool. Lifeguards again administered CPR, but their efforts were unfortunately unsuccessful.

Celebration Key, which has been operational for just a few weeks, is part of Carnival’s strategy to enhance passenger experiences by offering exclusive destinations. The cruise line emphasizes safety and security at these private locations, ensuring that medical personnel and security protocols are as robust as those aboard their ships.

Carnival Cruise Line expressed their condolences, stating that their thoughts are with the guests’ families. They assured that their care team is actively providing support to those affected by the incidents.

Investigations are ongoing, with autopsies planned to determine the exact causes of death for both individuals. The Royal Bahamas Police are overseeing the investigation and have classified both incidents as drownings.

In response to the events, the U.S. State Department has been informed and is monitoring the situation closely. They are prepared to offer assistance to the families if needed.
