Two shot near a church, one critically injured

BRONX, NY – In a troubling continuation of gun violence in the Bronx, two men were shot and another was grazed by a bullet near East Fordham Road and Marion Avenue just before 9 p.m. on Thursday. The incident unfolded despite recent efforts by the mayor to bolster police presence in the area.

Police swarmed the scene, a bustling intersection sandwiched between a church and a hair salon, with at least ten bullet casings marked by orange cones on the ground. The shooting occurred in an area known for heavy traffic, adding to the chaos of the evening.

Officers responded to a 911 call and found three victims. A 17-year-old male suffered gunshot wounds to his thigh and ankle, while a 20-year-old man was hit in the knee. Both were transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital in stable condition. A third victim, aged 28, was grazed on the back of the head but was treated at the scene.

Adding a somber note to the night, a candlelight memorial stood nearby, though its purpose remained unclear. The presence of the memorial served as a stark reminder of the community’s ongoing struggles with violence.

Authorities are actively searching for two suspects who fled the scene on a scooter. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. The shooting has left residents on edge, frustrated by the relentless surge of violence in their neighborhood.

The mayor’s recent announcement of deploying an additional 1,000 police officers to the Bronx aims to curb such incidents. However, the latest shooting underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in tackling the issue.

The scene remains a focal point for investigators, with police maintaining a strong presence as they piece together the sequence of events leading to the shooting. Residents are hopeful for a swift resolution and increased safety measures.

The Bronx community continues to grapple with the aftermath, yearning for peace and security in their daily lives.
