Two teens injured in shootout

EAST HARLEM, NY – A chaotic scene unfolded in East Harlem during rush hour on Tuesday when gunfire erupted between two groups of teenagers. The incident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on East 123rd Street, saw police officers responding swiftly to the violence.

Authorities stated that officers on patrol nearby heard the shots and saw the teenagers exchanging gunfire across Second Avenue. The officers, emerging from the Wagner Houses, quickly intervened, with one officer discharging their weapon at the armed teens.

Two 15-year-olds were reportedly injured in the shootout, each sustaining leg wounds. They were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment. The police have identified three separate crime scenes related to the incident, underscoring the complexity of the situation.

As the investigation continues, police have taken two individuals into custody. One is a teenager who was shot, while the other is an 18-year-old with a known history of violent offenses. Officials credited the officers’ quick response with preventing further escalation and potential casualties.

Among those detained was Damian Calhoun, 18, who was found in possession of a firearm equipped with an extended clip capable of holding 31 rounds. Just weeks prior, Calhoun had pleaded guilty to attempted murder in a case from the previous year but remained free pending sentencing due to his age at the time of the crime.

Residents witnessed a flurry of police activity as law enforcement secured the area and gathered evidence. Despite the volume of gunfire, no bystanders were injured, a fact that police highlighted as fortunate given the time and location of the incident.

The community is grappling with the broader implications of youth violence and the legal system’s handling of juvenile offenders. Authorities are working diligently to piece together the events that led to the confrontation and to understand the motivations behind it.

In the aftermath, police presence remains heavy as they continue to comb through evidence and conduct interviews. The officers involved in the shootout were unharmed, providing a silver lining to an otherwise tense situation.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in curbing youth violence and ensuring public safety.
