Authorities say the confrontation followed reports of attempted break-ins at two homes west of Fresno.
FRESNO COUNTY, CA — Newly obtained video shows the events leading up to a Fresno County sheriff’s deputy shooting a 24-year-old man during a confrontation Tuesday evening, although the footage does not capture the gunfire itself.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office identified the injured man as Juwan Priddie of Santa Maria. Authorities allege Priddie fought with the deputy after being linked to two reported home invasions in communities west of Fresno. He remained hospitalized after surgery and had been booked into jail, according to a report published Thursday by ABC30 Action News.
The first call came at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from a home near Olive and Cornelia avenues, the Sheriff’s Office said. A deputy responding to the reported home invasion learned that the man involved had left before law enforcement arrived. Residents described him as driving a white van equipped with a ladder rack on its roof.
About 19 minutes later, authorities received another call about a similar incident at a home near Garfield and Shields avenues, close to Roosevelt Elementary School. Sheriff’s officials said the man at the second property matched the description provided after the first report. They also allege he threatened to kill people living at the second home.
The newly obtained video shows portions of the encounter before the shooting. The footage does not show the deputy firing, according to ABC30, but it later shows Priddie on the ground after he was struck. The complete circumstances surrounding the use of force remain under investigation, and authorities had not publicly released the deputy’s name.
Sheriff’s officials said Priddie began fighting with the deputy when the officer arrived at the second home. The department said the deputy feared for his life and fired three times, striking Priddie at least once. That account represents the Sheriff’s Office’s description of the confrontation and had not been independently confirmed through publicly released body-camera footage or a completed investigation.
Additional deputies arrived within minutes and provided medical aid before Priddie was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He suffered severe injuries and underwent surgery, ABC30 reported. No updated medical condition was immediately available.
The deputy was also taken to a hospital for treatment of bruises and scrapes. Authorities had not released further information about the deputy’s injuries or said when the officer might return to duty.
Priddie was booked while hospitalized and was being held on $100,000 bail, according to the report. He faces allegations including attempted burglary, resisting arrest with violence, battery on a peace officer and making criminal threats. The accusations have not been proven in court, and information about an attorney representing him was not immediately available.
Investigators had not released additional footage, detailed forensic findings or a final determination on whether the deputy’s use of force complied with law and department policy. The case remained under investigation Friday.
