FRESNO, CA – A long-standing family tragedy reached its conclusion in a Fresno courtroom on Wednesday as Yarelly Solorio-Rivera was sentenced to two life terms in prison for the murders of her sister and infant niece. The 25-year-old avoided a potential death penalty through a plea agreement.
In 2022, Solorio-Rivera was accused of fatally shooting her 18-year-old sister, Yanelly, and Yanelly’s three-week-old daughter. Her lawyer claimed she acted out of fear for her own children’s safety, following threats from Yanelly.
Prosecutors, however, painted a different picture, suggesting jealousy motivated the crime. They alleged Solorio-Rivera conspired with her boyfriend, Martin Arroyo-Morales, to carry out the murders. Arroyo-Morales received a 22-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter.
The courtroom saw a poignant moment as Solorio-Rivera’s father attended the hearing to support her, blaming Arroyo-Morales for the tragedy. He argued that his daughter was not solely responsible for the crime.
No one in court spoke on behalf of the young victims, and neither defendant made a statement. Solorio-Rivera’s attorney confirmed her remorse, stating she was deeply sorry and acknowledged she could have acted differently.
With the case resolved through a plea deal, much of the evidence remains sealed. The resolution comes nearly three years after the tragic events unfolded.
