One incident resulted in tragedy, while the other saw a state trooper’s daring maneuver prevent further catastrophe.
In a dramatic series of events early Saturday morning, an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer took decisive action to stop a wrong-way driver. The officer, responding to reports of a vehicle traveling south in the northbound HOV lane on Loop 101, made the bold decision to crash into the suspect’s car to prevent potential harm to other motorists.
Body camera footage reveals the officer’s bravery as he drove head-on into the wrong-way vehicle, later identified as a 2023 Honda Accord. Despite the collision causing his patrol car to spin and lose a front tire, the officer swiftly apprehended the driver, 26-year-old Nicholas Chavez of Glendale. Chavez now faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence and aggravated assault of an officer.
In a separate incident later that night, a wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle on the Loop 202 near Power Road, resulting in the death of a Mesa resident. The suspect, a 23-year-old from San Tan Valley, sustained life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.
These incidents highlight the ongoing issue of wrong-way driving on Arizona’s highways. According to DPS, there have been 51 such crashes resulting in nine fatalities this year.
