SHEBOYGAN FALLS, WI – A Canadian man’s golf vacation in Wisconsin took a tragic turn when he was fatally shot following a dispute over a ride. Giovanni “Mike” Robinson, 32, was visiting Sheboygan Falls with friends when the incident occurred early Wednesday morning.
Authorities have charged 35-year-old Luis Cruz Burgos with first-degree reckless homicide. The shooting unfolded after Robinson and his group attempted to arrange a ride back to their hotel with Cruz Burgos, who was working as a DoorDash driver at the time.
According to the criminal complaint, Robinson and his friends had been celebrating his first hole-in-one at a local bar. Unable to secure an Uber, they decided to walk and then negotiate a cash ride. Tensions escalated when the group argued over the payment, with one man reportedly refusing to pay $40 for the short trip.
Surveillance footage captured the exchange, and witnesses reported that Cruz Burgos initially drove away, only to return moments later. It was then that Robinson was shot, allegedly by Cruz Burgos, who denied having a firearm.
The victim’s brother-in-law, who was present, held Robinson as he succumbed to his injuries. The tragedy has left Robinson’s family devastated, just weeks after he welcomed a baby girl and ahead of his sister’s wedding.
In interviews with police, Cruz Burgos initially denied contacting the group but later admitted to discussing the ride. He claimed the men insulted him and one made an obscene gesture. Despite his denial of involvement in the shooting, Cruz Burgos remains in custody.
If convicted of the charges, Cruz Burgos could face up to 60 years in prison. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, as Robinson’s friends and family struggle to come to terms with their loss.
