OAKLAND, CA – A violent weekend has left the Oakland community reeling after two individuals were killed and four others injured in a series of shootings. Families are now seeking answers as they mourn their loved ones.
Early Saturday morning, gunfire erupted on 18th Street just after 2 a.m. Just 45 minutes later, another incident was detected by Oakland police using their ShotSpotter technology on 17th and San Pablo. Upon arrival, officers found 21-year-old Israel Miller Jr. critically wounded.
“It’s incredibly hard. No parent should have to bury their child,” said Israel Miller Sr., speaking from the family home in Alameda. Miller Jr. leaves behind a three-year-old son. His father described him as a “good kid” who faced challenges during his upbringing.
Miller Sr. shared that his son struggled with the pressures of street life while trying to make positive changes. Despite attending a continuation school in Oakland, family difficulties complicated his path. “He wanted to make a difference in his life, but one mistake cost him everything,” Miller Sr. lamented.
The grieving father also pointed to social media as a factor in his son’s troubles, suggesting it played a role in drawing him toward negative influences. He urged other parents to remain actively involved in their children’s lives and to monitor their social media activities closely.
“Be deeply involved in your kids’ lives and keep an eye on what they’re glamorizing,” he advised. “The streets are often portrayed in a deceptive light.”
In response to the tragedy, Miller Jr.’s family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. Meanwhile, Oakland police continue to investigate this incident alongside four additional shootings that occurred over the weekend.
