The boy’s father was severely injured, and police are searching for the driver of a dark-colored sedan that left the scene.
LOS ANGELES, CA — A 7-year-old boy died after being struck by two vehicles in South Los Angeles late Wednesday, and police said the driver of the second vehicle fled without stopping. The boy’s 39-year-old father was also severely injured in the collision.
Los Angeles Police Department South Traffic Division detectives said the crash happened at about 10 p.m. Nov. 4 on Figueroa Street, south of 77th Street. Police said the boy ran into the roadway before the first collision occurred. Investigators are now seeking the driver of a dark-colored, four-door sedan that police said later struck the child and left the area.
The driver of the first vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police. The second driver did not stop to provide aid or identify themselves after striking the boy, police said. Authorities had not publicly identified that driver as of Thursday.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the boy and his father to a local hospital. Police said the father suffered severe injuries. The child later died from his injuries. Authorities had not publicly released the boy’s name in the information available Thursday.
Police have released only limited information about the sequence of the crash. The LAPD said the father and son were both involved in the collision, but the department’s public statement did not provide additional details about how the father was injured or identify the driver or vehicle involved in the first impact.
Investigators described the vehicle that fled as a dark-colored, four-door sedan. No further description of the vehicle or its driver was immediately released. Police did not announce whether investigators had obtained surveillance video, witness statements or other evidence that could help identify the driver.
The case is being investigated as a fatal hit-and-run. Los Angeles has a Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund that can provide a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to an offender’s identification, apprehension and conviction, or a resolution through a civil compromise, according to the LAPD.
South Traffic Division detectives continued seeking information Thursday about the driver who left the scene. No arrest had been announced, and police said the investigation remained active.
