PRESCOTT, AZ – The tragic case of 10-year-old Rebecca Baptiste continues to unfold with new revelations emerging from police interviews. Rebecca’s death, which occurred on July 30, has led to charges against her father and his girlfriend. The details surrounding the case are deeply disturbing.
Law enforcement in northeastern Arizona is fully engaged in the investigation, as highlighted by the recently obtained 36-page report from the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office. The document outlines the grim circumstances Rebecca endured before her death, allegedly at the hands of her father, Richard Baptiste, and his girlfriend, Aissa Woods.
Interviews conducted with the suspects reveal a history of abuse and neglect. Woods initially reported that a neighbor found Rebecca unresponsive after an attempted escape. However, records indicate this was not Rebecca’s first attempt to flee the abusive environment.
The family, originally from Phoenix, relocated to a rural area in Apache County, living in a yurt tent without basic amenities. Reports show that Rebecca attempted to escape multiple times, seeking refuge with other adults. Each attempt left her dehydrated and injured, yet no medical help was sought.
Woods, who claimed to have nursing experience, decided against medical intervention, believing Rebecca would recover on her own. This decision proved fatal as Rebecca’s condition deteriorated, leaving her too weak to even drink from a straw.
When questioned, Baptiste and Woods initially denied knowledge of the girl’s injuries, suggesting she might have fallen. However, medical examinations at Phoenix Children’s Hospital revealed evidence of severe abuse, including a brain bleed, burn marks, and other injuries.
In police interviews, Baptiste exhibited little emotion and eventually admitted to using excessive force with a belt as punishment for Rebecca’s attempts to run away. He denied responsibility for her head trauma.
Further investigation revealed that before calling 911, the suspects changed Rebecca’s clothes, and police later discovered bloody garments in their tent. When asked about their potential punishment, Woods suggested jail time, while Baptiste expressed his unworthiness as a father.
Both suspects face first-degree murder charges, with additional charges anticipated as the investigation progresses.
