Police say the 16-year-old held a woman at gunpoint, forced her to withdraw $1,000 and fled in her vehicle.
SNELLVILLE, GA — A 16-year-old is facing nine felony charges, including rape, after police accused him of holding a woman at gunpoint at an ATM, forcing her to withdraw $1,000, sexually assaulting her and taking her car.
Gabriel Ginty of Snellville is charged with kidnapping, armed robbery and hijacking, among other offenses, according to a report citing Snellville police and arrest warrants. Authorities said the attack happened around 5:30 a.m. Monday at the Navy Federal Credit Union on Scenic Highway. Ginty is being prosecuted as an adult in Gwinnett County Superior Court.
Police said the woman was at the ATM before sunrise when Ginty allegedly approached her with a firearm. Investigators accused him of keeping the woman at gunpoint while making her enter her personal identification number and withdraw $1,000. Authorities said he then sexually assaulted her before leaving in her vehicle. The victim has not been publicly identified.
Arrest warrants cited in local reporting allege Ginty had a Glock .40-caliber pistol and held the weapon on the woman during the encounter. Authorities have not publicly released additional details about the sexual assault, and restrained accounts of the case have omitted unnecessary details about the alleged attack.
The woman called 911 while it was still dark, according to police. Investigators then reviewed surveillance cameras in the area as they tried to locate her stolen vehicle. Police said officers later found Ginty and arrested him after a short foot chase. Authorities did not report additional injuries connected to the arrest.
A judge denied Ginty bond on two counts after finding that his release could pose a danger to another person or the community, according to the report. The teenager is being held at the Rockdale Regional Youth Detention Center. No booking photograph had been released as of the latest reporting.
The case is proceeding despite Ginty’s age because he is being tried as an adult in Gwinnett County Superior Court. The allegations remain accusations, and the filing of criminal charges does not establish guilt. Authorities have not publicly detailed the disposition of all nine counts beyond identifying rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and hijacking among the charges.
The arrest drew concern from people who use the same shopping area and ATM. Two customers interviewed by WSB-TV said the allegations had made them think more carefully about visiting ATMs during early-morning or nighttime hours. Their comments reflected unease after learning that police said the encounter happened while the area was still dark.
Ginty had previously been reported missing in May and was later found safe, according to local reporting. Police have not publicly indicated that the earlier missing-person case had any connection to the allegations filed this week.
Ginty remains in juvenile detention while the felony case moves forward in Superior Court. Local reporting said he is due in court next month, but an exact hearing date was not confirmed in the material reviewed.
