A 28-year-old officer is killed in the line of duty

TERRELL, TX – The somber streets of Terrell were lined with law enforcement vehicles early this morning as a poignant procession honored the life of Officer Jacob Cardenosa, a young officer tragically killed in the line of duty. Cardenosa, just 28 years old, leaves behind a family, including a young child, and a community in mourning.

The procession, which began at the Baylor Scott & White Emergency Room, where Cardenosa was taken following the incident, traveled to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office. The line of more than 50 vehicles included motorcycles and a hearse draped with the American flag, a solemn tribute to the fallen officer. The parking lot of the hospital was filled with vehicles from various departments, including those from Forney and Dallas, as well as deputies from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

Cardenosa, a recent addition to the Terrell Police Department, was warmly welcomed to the force just a few months ago. A photo of him with the city’s mayor was shared in July, marking the beginning of what was hoped to be a long and commendable career in law enforcement.

The tragedy unfolded late last night in the parking lot of a Super 8 motel, where Officer Cardenosa encountered a suspect in a pickup truck. A struggle ensued, leading to Cardenosa being fatally shot. The suspect fled the scene, sparking an extensive search throughout the night.

Kaufman County deputies spotted the pickup near the county line and initiated a pursuit that ended when the truck crashed. The driver fled into a wooded area but was apprehended early this morning. Details about the suspect remain scarce at this time, with authorities withholding the individual’s name pending further investigation.

This incident comes on the heels of another recent tragedy in the North Texas law enforcement community, as officers had been supporting the Greenville Police Department following the death of one of their own less than two weeks ago.

The loss of Officer Cardenosa has left a palpable sense of grief among his colleagues and the entire North Texas law enforcement community. Officers are rallying around the Terrell Police Department, offering support and solidarity during this difficult time.

As investigations continue, the community of Terrell and surrounding areas remain steadfast in their support, honoring the bravery and dedication of those who serve to protect.
