Active shooter attacks Fort Stewart in Georgia

FORT STEWART, GA – An active-duty soldier at Fort Stewart opened fire on his fellow soldiers, injuring five, late Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 11 a.m., shaking the military community in Georgia. Fortunately, all injured soldiers are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

The suspected shooter, identified as Sgt. Cornelius Radford, was quickly subdued by other soldiers and is now in custody. Security measures have been reinstated, and Fort Stewart is no longer under lockdown. Authorities assured there is no threat to the local community.

Brig. Gen. John Loomis praised the swift response of military and local law enforcement, as well as medical teams. “Their quick actions prevented further casualties,” he said. The wounded were initially treated at Winn Army Community Hospital, with three requiring further care at Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

Sgt. Radford, an automated logistics specialist with the Second Brigade Combat Team, has no prior combat deployments. He is currently held in pretrial confinement as the Army Criminal Investigation Division continues its probe.

The Army has yet to determine a motive for the shooting. “We are still gathering information,” said Gen. Loomis, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Radford’s arrest for a recent DUI had gone unnoticed by his command until now.

The firearm used was a personal handgun, not military-issued, raising questions about security protocols on base. Gen. Loomis expressed confidence in the installation’s security, highlighting the partnership with local law enforcement.

The families of the victims have been notified, and support services are being provided to them. “Our primary focus is on caring for the injured soldiers and their loved ones,” Loomis stated.

The investigation will continue, with authorities assessing any potential threats. The Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and surrounding communities.
