BIG SKY, MT – A campground near Moose Creek Road became the center of a homicide investigation after authorities discovered Dustin Kjersem, 35, dead in his tent. Initially suspected to be a bear attack, investigators later identified it as a brutal murder.
The tragic turn of events began when a concerned friend, failing to meet Kjersem as planned, ventured to the campsite on Saturday and encountered the grim scene. A 911 call was made, inaccurately attributing the death to a bear attack, as noted by Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer during a Wednesday briefing.
Investigators, alongside an agent from Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, found no bear activity in the area but uncovered signs of a vicious attack. Autopsy results revealed Kjersem suffered multiple chop wounds, including trauma to his skull.
The shocking nature of the crime has left authorities in a challenging position. The isolated site lacks cellphone service, complicating the search for suspects. Sheriff Springer admitted the community’s threat level is uncertain, and he advised residents to remain cautious outdoors.
In an appeal for help, Sheriff Springer urged the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing the heinous manner of Kjersem’s killing. He stressed the need for community awareness while investigations continue day and night.
Kjersem was last seen on Thursday afternoon, driving a black 2013 Ford F-150 equipped with a topper and ladder rack. Authorities request any witnesses or individuals with information about the vehicle to come forward.
Captain Nathan Kamerman highlighted the need for community assistance, particularly from those frequenting the area or witnessing unusual activity involving Kjersem’s vehicle.
Kjersem’s sister, Jillian Price, described her brother as a devoted father and skilled tradesman. She expressed a heartfelt plea for justice, urging the community to identify and bring the perpetrator to justice, noting the heinous nature of the crime.
As the case develops, law enforcement officials seek any leads that might help solve the mystery behind Kjersem’s untimely death and ensure the community’s safety.
