Armed robber shot and killed by police

ROME, GA – A police-involved shooting in Rome, Georgia, resulted in the death of an individual on Friday, as reported by local authorities. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the Rome Police Department received a call involving an armed robbery. Responding officers arrived at the 400 block of South Broad Street around 11 a.m.

Upon their arrival, officers found an individual who started to flee after seeing the law enforcement. According to the police department, the individual pulled out a weapon while being chased by an officer, leading the officer to shoot the individual. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aerial footage showed the corner of South Broad Street near McGhee Street cordoned off with police tape. Multiple evidence markers were evident at the scene.

The case is now under investigation led by agents from GBI. The officer involved in the shooting has recently been placed on administrative duties. As per institutional mandate, he will continue to be on administrative leave as the investigation continues. “The Rome Police Department understands the value of every human life and will work diligently to maintain transparency throughout this investigation,” commented Rome Police Department Chief Denise Downer-McKinney.

Details about the reported robbery are unknown, and it remains unclear whether anything was taken. The identity of the deceased individual was not immediately disclosed. Satellite maps suggest the location of the incident to be a residential neighborhood near the Etowah River and Oostanaula River.
