FORT LEONARD WOOD, MO – Authorities are investigating the death of a U.S. Army sergeant found in a dumpster on Monday at Fort Leonard Wood as a possible homicide. Sergeant Sarah Roque, a 23-year-old from Indiana stationed at the Missouri base, was reported missing after failing to attend her unit’s morning formation.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Major General Christopher Beck announced that a person of interest had been identified in connection with Roque’s death. Beck refrained from giving further details, citing the ongoing investigation. By Thursday afternoon, the person of interest was taken into custody.
The discovery of Roque’s body, located near the single soldiers’ quarters, prompted an immediate response from military and local law enforcement. The community around Fort Leonard Wood was left in shock, mourning the unexpected loss of a fellow soldier.
The incident has deeply affected retirees and active military members residing in the community, among them retired Master Sgt. Joe Wilkinson, who expressed disbelief over the possibility of such a tragedy occurring on a military installation.
Roque, hailing from Ligonier, Indiana, embarked on her Army journey in 2020, undergoing Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood. She served as a bridge crew member and Mine Dog Handler for the 5th Engineer Battalion, known for training service dogs.
Her role was highly respected, with fellow soldiers recognizing her dedication and accomplishments. Army statements highlighted her recognition with awards such as the Army Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
In remembrance, Roque’s unit plans to hold a memorial service next week on the base, though it will remain closed to the public.
The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division is working alongside the FBI and local authorities to uncover the circumstances surrounding Roque’s death. While officials, including Army Agent John McCabe, have not disclosed details regarding the person of interest, they assure the public of their commitment to ensuring safety at the base.
Major General Beck underlined that Roque was a dedicated and honorable soldier, expressing condolences to her family and unit during this challenging time.
