Backpacker dies while hiking on remote trail

LAKE LESAGE, MI – A 37-year-old female hiker from Battle Creek, Michigan, tragically died following the abrupt onset of health complications while she was backpacking at Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park near Lake LeSage. This incident was confirmed by authorities late Monday.

According to a press release from the National Park Service (NPS), the woman, whose identity is currently withheld, was hiking with a partner when she suddenly suffered medical difficulties. As her condition rapidly worsened, she became unable to walk, lost consciousness, and eventually stopped breathing. Attempts were made to revive her through CPR, but they were unfortunately ineffective.

Other hikers in the vicinity were able to reach out to the Michigan State Police, who then communicated the situation to an NPS dispatch center.

National Park Service Dispatch stated that the park ranger and EMTs located the hiking party and accompanied them overnight. Isle Royale staff transported the group from the remote location early on Tuesday morning.

The National Park Service conveyed its deepest condolences to the deceased hiker’s family and friends as part of their statement, ending with an assurance that an investigation into this tragic incident is presently ongoing.
