Block party shooting leaves one dead, eight injured

A shooting incident unfolded in west Philadelphia as one man lost his life and eight others were wounded during an outdoor gathering. This incident occurred just two days after another homicide took place on the same block. The police were called to the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning, where they discovered a large crowd and multiple shooting victims.

The victims were swiftly transported to the hospital, with two being taken by officers and two others by emergency responders. Unfortunately, a 19-year-old man succumbed to his injuries, while the remaining victims, seven of whom were female, were reported to be in stable condition or had sustained graze wounds.

Among the injured, a 47-year-old man who was shot in the back was listed in stable condition. A 21-year-old woman was hit five times in both legs, while two other women, aged 20 and 21, also suffered leg wounds but were in stable condition. Additionally, a 17-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to her leg. Two more victims, a 20-year-old woman with a graze wound on her shoulder and a 17-year-old girl grazed on the thigh, were also reported. The police recovered 60 fired cartridge casings from various weapons at the scene.

According to Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore, witnesses described the incident as a “shoot-out” during a block party or barbecue on the row house street. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Notably, just two days prior, a 30-year-old man was shot and killed at a residence on the same block. While arrests were made in that case, it is yet to be determined if there is any connection between the two shootings.
