Carjacking suspect killed in shootout with police

CARLSBAD, CA – A deadly crime spree that began in Carlsbad and concluded with a shootout in Orange County has left the community grappling with shock and grief. A 31-year-old gunman fatally shot a woman during a carjacking on Friday night, sparking a police pursuit that ended with his death in a confrontation with officers.

Residents of Carlsbad are reeling from the incident that unfolded on Glenway, where the victim was shot multiple times. According to witnesses, the evening had started out as any other, but quickly turned tragic.

Marina Scott, who lives near the crime scene, recalled the chilling sounds of gunfire. “It was just a normal Friday night,” she said. “I heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.”

Carlsbad police responded to reports of gunfire at around 9:53 p.m. License plate reader technology soon directed the investigation north to Orange County, where the suspect was located.

The pursuit culminated in a confrontation with Newport Beach police. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, with helicopters overhead and officers closing in. Oswaldo Morales, who witnessed the chase, described it as surreal. “I was in shock,” he said. “We saw the chase come off the freeway, and then the suspect started shooting.”

The shootout left the suspect dead, with no injuries reported among the officers involved. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the outcome, as investigators continue to piece together the events leading to the tragedy.

Authorities are working to identify the victim and determine whether there was any prior connection between her and the suspect. Officials emphasize that they believe this was an isolated incident, posing no further threat to the community.

As the investigation continues, Marina Scott shared a poignant reminder with her daughter: “No more hot tub at night, no more going out with friends.”
