CHILLICOTHE, OH – The tragic death of a corrections officer on Christmas morning has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond, prompting calls for action from law enforcement and labor unions. Officer Andrew Lansing, a respected member of the Ross Correctional Institution, was fatally attacked by inmate Rashawn Cannon, 27, who had been serving time for felony assault convictions.
Cannon, who had been incarcerated for just over a year, was scheduled to remain in prison until 2030. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols and staffing levels within Ohio’s correctional facilities. The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, which represents state employees, is urging Governor Mike DeWine to take immediate action, highlighting longstanding issues within the prison system.
Christopher Mabe, president of the association, emphasized the need for urgent reforms, citing years of overlooked warning signs. “This tragedy could have been prevented,” Mabe stated, underscoring the fatigue and fear pervasive among corrections officers. In response, the association has formally requested the suspension of the director and warden at the Ross Correctional Institution pending the outcome of the investigation into Lansing’s death.
The union’s demands also include prioritizing officer safety, addressing rampant violence and drug issues within the facilities, and holding leadership accountable for chronic staff shortages. Mabe stressed the importance of establishing safe staffing levels to ensure the security and functionality of the prisons.
Currently, the Ross Correctional Institution is reportedly operating with approximately 40 open positions, forcing existing staff to work overtime. This staffing shortfall has contributed to a climate of fear and exhaustion among officers, with many feeling overwhelmed and helpless.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has taken charge of the investigation into the incident. Officer Lansing was remembered by family and colleagues as a dedicated mentor and a great person, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to his role.
