SANTA MARIA, CA – On Wednesday, a 20-year-old man set off an explosive device in the lobby of a courthouse in Santa Maria, California. The explosion resulted in minor injuries to five people, leading to a shutdown of the courthouse and adjacent city buildings. Santa Barbara County Undersheriff Craig Bonner confirmed the suspect’s arrest on charges that include attempted murder and possession of explosive devices.
Santa Maria Courthouse witnessed the incident shortly after 8:45 a.m., prompting the detention of the Santa Maria resident who had come for his arraignment following his arrest for illegal gun possession. The suspect reportedly threw a bag at the screening station in the courthouse lobby, which subsequently exploded. At the time of his arrest outside the courthouse, the suspect was found wearing body armor under his jacket.
Despite the severity of the situation, Undersheriff Bonner reassured residents that this was a local issue that has been safely resolved, and there is no further risk to community safety. He also highlighted that none of the victims, three of whom suffered burns, were court employees. All the victims were treated and have been discharged from the hospital.
Besides the current charges, the suspect is being probed for possible links to recent arson cases. Authorities had earlier arrested him in July and confiscated a concealed revolver. The explosion led to the evacuation of nearby areas, including businesses, homes, and schools.
The explosion was described as a loud bang, similar to falling chairs, by Shane Mellon, who was at the courthouse during the incident. He also saw a smoldering sweater and a man screaming while being restrained by several people. He hailed the deputies’ swift response, stating that the situation could’ve escalated without their intervention.
California authorities, including Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, have stepped up patrols across courthouses, especially in neighboring Los Angeles County. Santa Maria City Hall and other localites were shut down as part of the ongoing investigation.
