Deputies rule welfare-check death a homicide

Palm Beach County investigators say the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a separate location.

BOCA RATON, FL — A person found dead inside a home in unincorporated Boca Raton during a Friday welfare check was the victim of a homicide, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday night. Deputies said the suspect, who knew the victim, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at another location.

The case moved quickly over the weekend from a “suspicious death” to a homicide confirmation after detectives returned to the house with a search warrant and reviewed evidence. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The sheriff’s office has not released the names of the victim or the suspect. The investigation is being handled by the Violent Crimes Division, which is mapping the final movements of both people and collecting statements from neighbors and relatives while forensic teams process the house.

Deputies were called to the 6000 block of Golf Vista Way around 11:51 a.m. Friday for a welfare check, according to the sheriff’s office. When they entered the residence, they found a person dead. Detectives secured the scene and awaited a search warrant before conducting a detailed search that extended into the evening. By Sunday, the agency said evidence indicated the death was a homicide and that the person believed responsible had already been located elsewhere, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “The suspect and the victim were known to each other,” sheriff’s office spokesperson Teri Barbera said in a statement, adding that investigators do not believe there is any wider danger to the neighborhood.

Neighbors described a quiet cul-de-sac where patrol cars and crime-scene vans remained for hours Friday and into Saturday as detectives canvassed the area. One neighbor, Jennifer Mackey, said she saw deputies arrive late Friday morning and later learned of the death. “I had met the father many years ago,” Mackey said, noting that residents in the area often look out for one another. Detectives did not identify the relationship between the victim and suspect, and authorities declined to release additional biographical details Sunday. The agency said the location where the suspect was found dead was not the same address as the homicide scene; investigators did not disclose that site while next-of-kin notifications continued.

The Golf Vista Way address lies west of Boca Raton city limits in unincorporated Palm Beach County, a suburban area of gated communities near major corridors including U.S. 441. Sheriff’s deputies patrol the area, and violent deaths are uncommon there compared with more densely populated parts of the county. The confirmation of homicide followed standard steps: securing the home, obtaining a search warrant, documenting the scene, and sending physical evidence to the county laboratory for testing. Detectives also reviewed nearby security cameras and interviewed neighbors to establish a timeline from the last confirmed contact with the victim to the welfare check, according to the agency’s public updates.

Investigators said the case bears the signs of a domestic incident because the people knew each other, but they did not label it as such pending autopsy results and a complete evidence review. The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death for the victim, with a separate review confirming the suspect’s self-inflicted gunshot wound. Detectives did not announce any additional searches or persons of interest. No court filings were listed as of Sunday night. If there are records to be unsealed, officials said they would be released after next-of-kin notifications and required redactions. A briefing is expected once the medical examiner finalizes reports.

On the block Sunday afternoon, tire marks from patrol vehicles remained near the driveway and yellow tape tied to a mailbox fluttered in a light breeze. Residents walked dogs and paused to talk in hushed tones about the police activity. “It’s a shock for a street like this,” said Robert Levin, who lives nearby and returned home Saturday to see deputies still posted at the entrance. Another neighbor, who asked not to be named, said the sheriff’s office checked doorbell cameras and asked about any unusual noises Thursday night or Friday morning. The house remained closed as deputies finished their scene work and collected boxed items from inside.

As of late Sunday, the sheriff’s office said the homicide investigation remains active, the victim’s identity has not been released, and the medical examiner’s findings are pending. Officials indicated an update could come early this week after next-of-kin notifications and autopsy results.
